The European Commission, as Programme Manager of the EU Space Programme, has confirmed a significant upgrade to EGNOS, Europe’s satellite-based augmentation system. On 25 August 2025, the GEO-3 satellite Eutelsat 5 West B moved from test to operational status, broadcasting the EGNOS Signal-in-Space.

This transition forms part of the EGNOS System Release 2.4.3, whose deployment began in August 2025. The release ensures reliable and uninterrupted services while preparing for future developments, including the next-generation EGNOS V3.

On 5 September 2025, GEO-2 ASTRA 5-B (PRN 123) will enter test status, following the activation of GEO-3. After this “GEO swap”, the operational EGNOS space segment will comprise GEO-1 and GEO-3, with GEO-2 continuing in a test role, and service continuity will remain unaffected.

The Commission is working closely with its operational agency, EUSPA, to oversee the upgrades and maintain system robustness. It underlined that integrating GEO-3 into the operational platform is a crucial step in guaranteeing reliability for users across Europe, especially in safety-critical sectors such as aviation.

Looking to the future, the deployment of EGNOS V3 is expected to deliver enhanced performance, greater robustness, and dual-frequency multi-constellation capabilities. This development will further strengthen Europe’s satellite navigation infrastructure.
