Fincantieri and thyssenkrupp Marine Systems partner to support Philippine Navy modernisation

By Defence Industry Europe

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri has entered into a strategic partnership with thyssenkrupp Marine Systems through an Industrial Collaboration Agreement. The initiative supports the Philippine Navy’s Horizon III military modernisation programme, aimed at enhancing national defence and securing territorial waters, particularly in the South China Sea.

The agreement focuses on the supply of advanced U212 Near Future Submarines (NFS), which are currently under construction in Italy. These submarines feature cutting-edge technologies such as Air Independent Propulsion and advanced stealth capabilities, significantly boosting operational performance.

In addition to submarine delivery, the partnership includes broad support services for the Philippine Navy, covering specialised training, logistics, and doctrinal development, with assistance from the Italian Navy. The collaboration also aligns with the Philippine Self-Reliant Defense Posture (SRDP) Revitalisation Act, contributing to the development of a new naval base and enhancing domestic defence infrastructure.

Fincantieri and thyssenkrupp Marine Systems bring a shared history of successful cooperation, having previously worked together on the U212A submarines for the Italian Navy. The renewed partnership reinforces both firms’ expertise in submarine design, construction, and long-term operational support.

Pierroberto Folgiero, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Fincantieri, remarked: “With decades of experience in submarine construction, Fincantieri has developed a solid expertise in delivering high-performance marine solutions. This cooperation is a key milestone in promoting our international export strategy, leveraging the latest cutting-edge Italian and German technologies and quality.”
