Finland: keel laid for second Pohjanmaa-class corvette at Rauma shipyard

By Defence Industry Europe

The keel for the second Pohjanmaa-class multi-role corvette was laid at the Rauma shipyard on Thursday, 8 May 2025. This event marks a significant milestone in the Squadron 2020 programme, symbolising the official commencement of hull assembly.

Construction of the second corvette began in October 2024. During the ceremony at Rauma Marine Constructions’ (RMC) multi-purpose hall, the vessel’s keel block was placed on the building blocks, accompanied by the traditional placement of lucky coins beneath it.

Attendees at the ceremony included personnel from RMC, representatives from the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command, the Finnish Navy, weapons system supplier Saab, and the classification society Lloyd’s Register. The ceremony followed maritime traditions, highlighting the significance of the keel laying in shipbuilding.

The keel for the first Pohjanmaa-class corvette was laid in April 2024, with the hull completed by December of the same year. That vessel is currently being prepared for launching as part of the ongoing progress of the Squadron 2020 project, which aims for completion by 2029.

RMC and its subsidiary, RMC Defence Oy, are constructing four Pohjanmaa-class corvettes for the Finnish Navy. These vessels are designed for year-round operations in the challenging and variable conditions of the Baltic Sea, with capabilities including naval mine-laying, anti-submarine warfare, and maintaining maritime security.
