France to provide Armed Forces of Ukraine with 40 SCALP cruise missiles

By Defence Industry Europe

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Tuesday that France will supply Ukraine with 40 long-range SCALP cruise missiles and hundreds of bombs. This announcement, made during a press conference, underlines France's escalating commitment to supporting Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia.

President Macron also revealed plans for a bilateral security cooperation agreement with Ukraine, akin to the recent pact between the United Kingdom and Kyiv. This move further solidifies France’s position in the international effort to bolster Ukraine’s defence against Russian aggression.

The SCALP missile system, known in the UK as the Storm Shadow, is highly regarded for its precision and range, capable of striking targets deep within the Russian-occupied eastern regions of Ukraine, well beyond the front lines. This capability is crucial for Ukraine in targeting strategic locations occupied by Russian forces.

In addition to the missile delivery, France’s commitment includes a substantial supply of bombs, intensifying the level of military aid extended to Ukraine. This support is a part of the broader international initiative to provide Ukraine with the necessary resources to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The effectiveness of the SCALP missile has been previously demonstrated in Ukrainian hands, notably during an operation that led to the destruction of significant Russian military assets in Sevastopol.
