French defence exports surge to EUR 18 billion in 2024, driven by submarine, fighter jet, and artillery sales

By Defence Industry Europe

The French Ministry of Armed Forces has announced that the country’s defence export contracts in 2024 have reached an impressive EUR 18 billion. This marks a significant rise of approximately EUR 10 billion compared to the EUR 8.2 billion recorded in 2023, although it remains below the record EUR 27 billion achieved in 2022.

Major international orders have driven the growth in 2024, with several high-profile deals secured by the French defence industry. Notably, the Naval Group signed a EUR 5.6 billion contract to build four conventionally powered Barracuda-class submarines for the Netherlands.

France’s Rafale fighter jets also contributed substantially to the surge in exports. Serbia placed an order worth EUR 2.7 billion for 12 Dassault Rafale multi-role aircraft, while Indonesia expanded its fleet by purchasing 18 additional jets for EUR 3 billion, increasing its total Rafale orders to 42.

The Caesar self-propelled howitzers have continued their export success, with orders from several nations. Beyond the 154 units delivered or ordered for Ukraine, Armenia, Estonia, Croatia, and Portugal have collectively ordered 96 units. To meet rising demand, the manufacturer, KNDS, plans to ramp up production to 12 howitzers per month by 2025.
