By Defence Industry Europe

On 14 December 2024, the French Navy successfully tested its next-generation F21 torpedo by sinking the hull of the decommissioned Aviso 'PM L'Her.' The nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) fired a warhead-equipped F21 torpedo in a live-fire exercise, showcasing its capability to neutralise both surface and underwater threats.

The test forms part of the Polaris initiative, aimed at enhancing high-intensity combat readiness. The F21 torpedo, designed for Rubis-class and Suffren-class nuclear-powered attack submarines and nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), offers significant advancements in stealth, range, strike speed, and detection capabilities compared to its predecessors.

“This campaign, planned under the military programming law, is of major interest to our forces,” stated the French Navy. “It comes as close as possible to reality and provides unprecedented human and operational lessons. BZ to our sailors!”

The exercise highlighted the complexity and challenges of real-world operations, strengthening the crews’ resolve and fostering tactical innovation. By incorporating the Polaris approach, the Navy continues to enhance its strategic and operational capabilities, ensuring preparedness for future conflicts.

The F21 torpedo represents a critical upgrade in the armament of the French Navy, bolstering the effectiveness of its submarine fleet. This successful demonstration reaffirms the Navy’s commitment to maintaining cutting-edge capabilities in underwater warfare.
