The new contract, set to commence in early 2025, builds upon the success of the initial framework agreement. The Maritime Heron, capable of flying for over 20 hours in its operational configuration, is equipped with state-of-the-art surveillance tools, including electro-optical and thermal infrared sensors, a high-performance maritime patrol radar, and an automatic identification system for vessels. This suite of technology allows for precise and efficient monitoring of European waters.
All data gathered by the Heron system is relayed directly to Frontex’s operational command centre in Warsaw and the host countries’ control centres. This real-time data sharing enables swift coordination of rescue missions, actions against illegal activities, and enhanced safety across the Mediterranean. Tim Behrens, CEO of Airbus DS Airborne Solutions, highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, “This new contract underlines both the leading position of ADAS and IAI in the provision and execution of services with Medium-Altitude, Long-Endurance drone systems and the long-standing, successful cooperation with the European Union.”
IAI, acting as a subcontractor to Airbus, expressed its confidence in continuing its successful operations. Moshe Levy, Vice President and General Manager of IAI’s Military Aircraft Group, remarked, “We will continue to provide Airbus with all its requirements, while delivering the highest level of professional service. The Heron UAS has clocked over 650,000 hours of operational flight around the world to date, successfully carrying out all its missions.”
