GDELS–Steyr unveils new air defence variant of PANDUR EVO at AUSA Global Force 2025

By Defence Industry Europe

General Dynamics European Land Systems–Steyr (GDELS–Steyr) will showcase a new air defence variant of its PANDUR 6x6 EVO vehicle at the AUSA Global Force Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama, from 25 to 27 March. The latest configuration, known as the Maneuver Short Range Air Defense (M-SHORAD) variant, is designed to counter both manned and unmanned aerial threats.

This advanced version features Moog’s unmanned RIwP (Reconfigurable Integrated-weapons Platform) turret, a modular and scalable system proven in multiple roles including air defence and fire support. It integrates a 30 x 113 mm XM914 cannon capable of firing proximity-fused ammunition, alongside twin launchers holding four Stinger anti-aircraft missiles each.

To enhance situational awareness, the vehicle is equipped with the next-generation Echodyne EchoShield radar, a software-defined Ku-band system offering medium-range, 4D pulse-Doppler tracking. Internally, the vehicle houses two control consoles and fire control computers to operate the weapon systems.

The PANDUR EVO platform is known for its flexibility and modular design, qualities further demonstrated by this new variant. It joins other platforms using the RIwP turret, such as the U.S. Army’s STRYKER-based SGT STOUT (M-SHORAD Inc 1) and the M-LIDS counter-drone system.

Austria is a key operator of the PANDUR 6×6 EVO, with 100 units already in service and an additional 225 vehicles ordered in February 2024, spanning twelve mission-specific variants. This reflects the platform’s growing role in modern European and allied defence forces.

The AUSA Global Force Symposium 2025 is expected to welcome over 6,000 attendees, offering a platform to showcase how the U.S. Army and its partners are adapting for future multi-domain operations. GDELS–Steyr’s new M-SHORAD PANDUR highlights its commitment to innovation in mobile air defence capabilities.
