Germany orders 90 Litening 5 targeting pods from Rafael to enhance Eurofighter Typhoon combat capabilities

By Defence Industry Europe

The German parliament has approved the procurement of 90 Litening 5 targeting pods for its Eurofighter Typhoon fleet. The decision is expected to enhance the Bundeswehr’s precision strike and reconnaissance capabilities while reinforcing its defence cooperation with Israel’s Rafael.

Rafael stated that it has been a trusted partner to Germany for decades, providing advanced solutions to support the operational readiness of the Bundeswehr. The company said the procurement of the latest-generation pods “reflects Germany’s confidence in the system and its proven operational record.”

Litening 5 is a fifth-generation targeting system that is already in service with 28 air forces worldwide. More than 2,000 units have been delivered, with the system accumulating over 2.2 million operational flight hours, making it one of the most extensively fielded targeting pods globally.

The system includes advanced electro-optical sensors, such as mid-wave and short-wave infrared, high-resolution colour imaging, and dual-wavelength laser designation. An optional synthetic aperture radar provides all-weather imaging, enabling long-range detection, identification and precision engagement across operational environments.

Germany is upgrading from its earlier Litening 3 pods in order to gain improved precision, survivability and future growth potential. The acquisition aligns with wider European and NATO priorities on sensor integration and mission adaptability within contested airspaces.

Rafael emphasised that it continues to work closely with Germany and other European partners. The company noted its commitment to ensuring that forces have access to “cutting-edge capabilities that are reliable, adaptable, and operationally proven.”
