Germany to deliver 17 additional IRIS-T air defence systems to Ukraine

By Defence Industry Europe

Germany has announced an order for 17 additional IRIS-T air defence systems for Ukraine, with deliveries set to commence in 2024. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz revealed the plan during a visit to an Air Force base near Kiel on 4th September.

The new package includes eight medium-range IRIS-T SLM systems and nine short-range IRIS-T SLS systems. These additions are intended to strengthen Ukraine’s air defence capabilities amid ongoing missile and drone threats. Chancellor Scholz stated that two systems of each type will be delivered within the current year, with the remaining units arriving by 2025, as reported by German broadcaster N-TV.

According to Bloomberg, citing an unnamed German government official, all 17 systems are expected to be fully delivered to Kyiv by 2026. This latest order builds on Germany’s previous contributions; since the beginning of the war, Germany has already supplied Ukraine with seven IRIS-T systems, covering both SLS and SLM variants.

Germany’s decision to expand its military support highlights its role as one of the primary arms suppliers to Ukraine, second only to the United States. Berlin has so far allocated approximately €28 billion in military assistance, encompassing both delivered equipment and future commitments.

Produced by Diehl Defence, the IRIS-T systems have been critical in helping Ukraine defend key infrastructure from aerial attacks. As Ukraine continues to endure missile and drone strikes, the enhanced air defence capabilities provided by these systems are expected to play a vital role in protecting crucial areas.
