Germany to send two additional Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine following U.S. agreement

By Defence Industry Europe

Germany announced on Friday it will deliver two more Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine under a new agreement with the United States. The deal ensures that Berlin will be prioritised to receive updated Patriot systems from Washington in return.

“Germany can initially support Ukraine with launchers and then with additional Patriot system components,” said German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius in a statement. He confirmed that the U.S. commitment enables Germany to make these deliveries without delay.

The Bundeswehr will first supply additional Patriot launchers to Ukraine within the coming days. Further system components will follow in two to three months as part of the phased support.

Berlin, which is funding the replacement systems, will receive newer Patriot units from the U.S. at an accelerated pace. This arrangement allows Germany to maintain its own defence capabilities while supporting Ukraine.

Ukraine’s need for air defence has increased as Russia has escalated aerial attacks across the country during the summer. Patriot systems have demonstrated their effectiveness in intercepting Russian ballistic missiles.

Germany has previously delivered three Patriot systems to Ukraine. Officials stated on Friday that the new deliveries will not impact Germany’s commitments to NATO.
