U.S. President Donald Trump has spoken with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba about working together on his proposed Golden Dome missile defence system, according to a report by Nikkei. The two leaders held the discussion during a phone call earlier this month.

The report states that the United States and Japan are expected to cooperate on technologies to intercept incoming threats. It also suggests that Japan’s involvement in the project could strengthen its position in ongoing trade negotiations with Washington.

President Trump recently announced that he had chosen a design for the $175 billion Golden Dome system. He has appointed U.S. Space Force General Michael Guetlein to lead the programme, which he aims to complete before the end of his term in 2029.

According to the U.S. Congressional Budget Office, the entire Golden Dome project could cost up to $831 billion over the next twenty years. Japan and the U.S. have previously worked together on missile defence, including the joint development of interceptors designed to strike warheads in space.
