Hanwha Aerospace confirms Chunmoo MLRS offer to Norwegian Armed Forces

By Defence Industry Europe

Hanwha Aerospace has confirmed that it is offering the Chunmoo Multiple Rocket Launch System (MLRS) to the Norwegian Armed Forces. The announcement was made during the ‘Hanwha-Norway Industry Day’ held at the NHO Conference in Oslo on 26 February.

The event gathered key representatives from the Norwegian defence industry, including Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KDA), Nammo, and over 30 other companies. The Korean Ambassador to Norway, Seo Min-Jeong, was also present, emphasising the strengthening ties between the two nations.

Chunmoo is a highly capable 239mm multiple rocket launcher system co-developed by Hanwha Aerospace and the Agency for Defense Development. It offers advanced long-range precision fire capabilities, attracting significant interest from Norwegian industry leaders at the event.

Hanwha Aerospace highlighted that the system’s adaptability makes it an attractive option for Norway. It can integrate with vehicles and launchers from various manufacturers, as demonstrated in Poland’s HOMAR-K programme, which combines Jelcz vehicles with Chunmoo launchers.

The system is designed to fire multiple types of ammunition, including 40 rounds of 130mm rockets, with ongoing development to support the widely used European 122mm standard. This flexibility enhances its potential integration into Norwegian defence systems.

Hanwha Aerospace has a history of successful cooperation with Norway, beginning with the supply of K9 VIDAR self-propelled howitzers in 2017. This partnership was further strengthened by additional contracts in 2022, bringing the total number of K9s and K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicles delivered to Norway to 28 and 14, respectively.

In June 2024, Hanwha Aerospace signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with KDA at the Eurosatory defence exhibition in France. The agreement aims to integrate Kongsberg’s Integrated Combat Solution (ICS), Digital Vehicle Platform, and Remote Weapon Systems into Hanwha’s platforms.

A previous MOU, signed in June 2022, focused on cooperation in Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) and Long-Range Precision Fire Systems (LRPFS). These agreements underline the growing strategic partnership between Hanwha Aerospace and Norway’s defence industry.

Hanwha Aerospace is South Korea’s largest aerospace and defence enterprise, producing a wide range of land combat vehicles and precision-guided munitions. The company is also a key player in South Korea’s space industry, supporting the Korea Space Launch Vehicle (KSLV) programme.
