Hans Christian Kjølseth, State Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, highlighted the importance of the project during the groundbreaking ceremony. “The establishment of the new Nammo factory is a milestone for Norway’s defence industry. This will boost the production of artillery ammunition and rocket motors, which are crucial for Norway, NATO, and Ukraine,” he said.
The project is part of a broader 1.083 billion NOK agreement between the Norwegian government and Nammo to maintain enhanced production readiness over the next 15 years. The factory will play a central role in increasing the production capacity of critical defence materials.
Kjølseth noted the urgency of the initiative, stating, “The war in Ukraine has created a significant need for artillery ammunition. Current production capacity is not enough to meet the demand, and the government has implemented measures to enable a substantial increase.”
The new facility is expected to contribute to meeting international demand while supporting domestic economic growth. The government has taken additional measures to strengthen Norway’s defence industry, including long-term contracts with Nammo and other key partners, as well as co-financing projects through the EU’s ASAP programme.
