Hanwha Aerospace secures USD 253 million deal for additional K9 Vajra-T howitzers for India

South Korean defence manufacturer Hanwha Aerospace has signed a new USD 253 million contract with India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) to supply components for 100 more K9 Vajra-T self-propelled howitzers. The agreement, formalised at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in New Delhi, marks a key development in the growing defence partnership between South Korea and India.

This contract follows the successful completion of an earlier order placed in 2017, under which 100 K9 Vajra-T units were delivered and proven effective in varied Indian operational conditions. The artillery systems have demonstrated strong performance, particularly in challenging terrains.

The new order enhances local manufacturing, increasing the indigenous content from over 50% in the first programme to 60% in this phase. This improvement is achieved through deeper industrial collaboration with L&T and reflects India’s push for greater self-reliance in defence production.

“This follow-up order reflects the deepening defence partnership between Korea and India,” said Jae-il Son, CEO and President of Hanwha Aerospace. “We will continue to be a trusted, reliable partner for India’s defence capabilities in the years ahead, supporting India’s vision for defence manufacturing self-reliance.”

The K9 Vajra-T is equipped with a 155mm/52-calibre gun system, offering high accuracy, extended range, and a rapid rate of fire in both burst and sustained modes. Its proven performance has made it a central component of India’s artillery modernisation efforts.

Beyond the K9 programme, Hanwha Aerospace is looking to expand cooperation with India in other defence areas, including air defence and advanced aerospace systems. The agreement is seen as a step towards broader strategic collaboration in defence manufacturing between the two nations.
