Hanwha Aerospace has signed a development contract with South Korea’s Agency for Defense Development (ADD) to lead the L-SAM II programme, a new long-range interceptor system. This next-generation capability marks a significant advancement in Korea’s multi-layered missile defence architecture.

The L-SAM II is designed to intercept high-altitude ballistic threats and will offer coverage up to three to four times greater than the current system. Central to the system is Hanwha’s proprietary attitude control technology, which enables precise “hit-to-kill” performance—a capability achieved by only a few countries globally.

This announcement follows Hanwha Systems’ selection as the lead developer of the Multi-Function Radar (MFR), which incorporates advanced algorithms for enhanced detection and tracking capabilities. The integration of L-SAM II, M-SAM II, and Patriot-class systems will form the core of South Korea’s missile defence shield, allowing early and layered interception of incoming threats.

“As demand grows for resilient air defence worldwide, Hanwha remains at the forefront—driving innovation, safeguarding sovereignty, and shaping the future of missile technology,” the company stated. With this contract, Hanwha strengthens its position as a key contributor to Korea’s national security and defence innovation.
