The South Korean defence company will highlight its capabilities across maritime and land domains, aiming to strengthen sovereign defence capacity and promote strategic partnership between Canada and South Korea. Flagship systems on display will include solutions tailored to meet Canada’s tri-ocean strategy and varied terrain.
Michael Coulter, CEO of Hanwha Global Defence, stated: “Hanwha is deeply committed to Canada’s defence, offering our unique proposition of global leading technology, value, and sovereign capacity with local production and support.” He added: “Our ‘Made with Canada, For Canada’ approach builds a robust, long-term partnership to create jobs, accelerate defence capabilities, and enhance vital Canada-South Korea cooperation, aligning with Canada’s Global vision and Indo-Pacific Strategy.”
For the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP), Hanwha will offer the KSS-III Submarine, equipped with lithium-ion batteries and an Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system. The submarine boasts over 7,000 nautical miles of range and can remain submerged for more than three weeks, making it suitable for Arctic and long-range missions.
If selected in 2026, Hanwha proposes a six-year delivery schedule with initial deliveries by 2032 and final units by 2035. To support long-term operations, Hanwha Ocean will establish a local In-Service Support (ISS) centre in Canada for over 30 years of maintenance and upgrades.
This local facility is expected to generate high-skilled jobs and promote regional industrial growth, enhancing Canada’s sovereign sustainment capabilities. Hanwha also aims to work with Canadian firms to localise the supply chain and transfer technology, reinforcing bilateral defence ties.
A scaled model of the proposed ISS centre will be displayed at the event, visually demonstrating Hanwha’s long-term vision and local commitment. Visitors will be able to explore how this investment supports Canada’s defence infrastructure.
The K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer will be a major exhibit, targeting Canada’s Indirect Fires Modernization programme. This 155mm/52-calibre artillery system delivers a 40km range, 8 rounds per minute firing rate, and high accuracy, and is currently in service with ten nations, including six NATO members.
Designed for rapid deployment and survivability, the K9 enables “shoot-and-scoot” tactics and is fully compatible with NATO ammunition and standards. The platform is supported by the “K9 User Club”, which ensures reliable through-life Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services.
Hanwha will also display the wheeled K9 Mobile Howitzer, offering a 700km operational range and 100km/h top speed. Its mobility makes it particularly suitable for Canada’s diverse operational environments.
Supporting artillery systems include the K10 Armored Ammunition Resupply Vehicle, which enables automated and rapid resupply operations. This system enhances the K9’s effectiveness during sustained combat missions.
The Chunmoo Multiple Rocket Launcher System (MRLS) will also be featured, capable of launching various guided munitions with precision. Its additional surface-to-ship missile capability aligns with Canada’s evolving maritime defence requirements.
Hanwha invites attendees to visit Booth No. 911, Hall 3 at the EY Centre during CANSEC 2025. There, the company will present its advanced defence solutions and discuss how it can support Canada’s security and industrial capacity.
