HENSOLDT to upgrade sensor systems in Bundeswehr’s Fennek reconnaissance vehicles

By Defence Industry Europe

German sensor specialist HENSOLDT has secured a contract to upgrade the sensor technology in 90 Fennek reconnaissance vehicles for the Bundeswehr. The contract entails upgrading both Fennek scout and Joint Fire Support Team (JFST) vehicles, marking a significant technological advancement for German military reconnaissance, HENSOLDT said in a press release.

The project involves replacing outdated observation and reconnaissance equipment on 30 scout vehicles from BAA I to the more advanced BAA III system. Similarly, 50 Fennek JFST vehicles will be upgraded from BAA II to BAA III, improving target detection and precision capabilities. To support the upgrade process, ten additional BAA III sensor sets will act as a reserve and later be used as spare parts, while two more will go to KNDS Deutschland for integration and verification.

The contract, valued in the mid-double-digit million euro range, includes the delivery of 92 BAA III sensor sets in total. HENSOLDT aims to complete the integration quickly to ensure the Fennek’s readiness for active Bundeswehr deployment. Deliveries are expected to commence in early 2026, with the programme being managed in close collaboration with the Federal Office for Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw).

The BAA III system represents a technological leap in military reconnaissance for the Bundeswehr. Its features include a laser target designator for precision weapons and a dual-band HDTV camera called ‘Red Kite’ that enhances visibility in both visible and short-wave infrared spectrums. This technology enables effective day and night reconnaissance and even facilitates observation of laser-based operations. Moreover, the new operating and display unit has been ergonomically redesigned for easier use in the field.

Commenting on the modernisation, Tanya Altmann, Head of HENSOLDT’s Optronics & Land Solutions division, stated, “With the upgrade of the Fennek vehicles to the BAA III sensor package, we are setting a new standard in military reconnaissance. The integrated, high-precision systems offer the user superior sensor performance and make the decisive difference in complex operational scenarios. As a technology partner, we are proud to contribute to the operational capability of our armed forces with state-of-the-art optoelectronics.”

Beyond enhanced target detection and tracking, the BAA III sensor system is designed to accommodate future technological advancements. It includes provisions for additional digital interfaces, ensuring that the Bundeswehr’s reconnaissance systems can adapt to evolving operational requirements.
