HII unveils AI-enabled ROMULUS unmanned vessel family powered by Odyssey software

By Defence Industry Europe

HII has introduced ROMULUS, a modular, AI-enabled family of unmanned surface vessels (USVs) powered by the Odyssey Autonomous Control System (ACS). The flagship, ROMULUS 190, is under construction with a 190-foot hull, designed for rapid production, speeds exceeding 25 knots and a range of 2,500 nautical miles carrying four intermodal containers.

Developed with Breaux Brothers, Beier Integrated Systems and Incat Crowther, ROMULUS is built to meet current and emerging requirements of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, joint forces and allies. It is intended to deliver sustained open-ocean autonomy with emphasis on lethality, scalability and cost efficiency.

“The future fight demands speed, agility, and resilience, all embedded in the Odyssey-powered ROMULUS family,” said Chris Kastner, HII president and CEO. “By matching world-class shipbuilding with decades of unmanned systems expertise, we are delivering a mission-ready, swarm USV capability built for the next generation of operations.”

Odyssey ACS has logged over 6,000 operational hours across more than 35 USV platforms for the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and international partners. The software’s open architecture allows rapid integration of sensors, payloads and third-party technologies while enabling testing by industry, government and academia.

ROMULUS incorporates technologies from Shield AI, Applied Intuition and C3 AI alongside Odyssey for autonomy, object classification and lifecycle sustainment. Its reconfigurable design supports teaming across surface, subsurface and air missions, including intelligence, strike, counter-unmanned systems and launch and recovery of unmanned vehicles.

Paired with HII’s REMUS unmanned undersea vehicles, ROMULUS extends undersea sensing for anti-submarine warfare and enhances mine countermeasure operations. The combination is designed to reduce risks to manned platforms while providing scalable dual-domain solutions.

HII developed ROMULUS with Dark Sea Labs, positioning it alongside the REMUS UUV family, of which more than 700 have been delivered to over 30 nations. Over 90 per cent of these remain operational, underscoring HII’s role as a provider of durable, autonomous maritime systems.
