Hisdesat opens Europe’s most advanced secure satellite control centre

By Defence Industry Europe

Hisdesat, the Spanish operator of governmental satellites, will soon inaugurate its new satellite control centre in Hoyo de Manzanares, near Madrid. Spanning 4,300 square metres, this cutting-edge facility will manage the operations of the upcoming SpainSat NG satellites and other future satellite programmes.

The new centre will centralise the control, monitoring, and management operations previously distributed across several locations. Designed as a smart building, it complies with the strict security requirements set by the Spanish Ministry of Defence, ensuring that Hisdesat can support Spain’s participation in international missions led by the EU, NATO, and the UN.

Hisdesat’s CEO, Miguel Ángel García Primo, highlighted the significance of the new centre: “This new facility represents both a qualitative and quantitative leap for Hisdesat as a governmental satellite operator. It is a next-generation control centre designed for the new generation of satellites that we will launch into orbit in the coming months.”

The SpainSat NG I and II satellites are among the most advanced globally, equipped with pioneering X-band active antennas capable of generating 16 communication beams and advanced anti-jamming systems to counter interference and cyber-attacks. These satellites are also software-defined, allowing near real-time payload configuration through a transparent digital processor.

The new control centre embodies Hisdesat’s commitment to efficiency, sustainability, and environmental responsibility, all while meeting the highest standards of security and privacy. The project’s design and execution were led by the global infrastructure operator Ferrovial.
