The two companies have a history of collaboration, having jointly developed the Combat System, including the Fire Control System and C4I system, for all Spanish Leopard 2 E tanks. With this latest MoU, they reaffirm their commitment to supporting and enhancing these critical components.
Rheinmetall Electronics, as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of the Leopard 2 fire control systems, provides a flexible approach to fleet management. The company ensures a unified core system while allowing for tailored modifications based on customer requirements.
Indra and Rheinmetall are offering advanced solutions that maintain full compatibility with other Leopard 2 versions. This approach allows users to operate within a common system framework while benefiting from continuous product innovations over the vehicle’s operational lifespan.
Both Indra and Rheinmetall are recognised as leading European defence firms, specialising in advanced land systems. Their expertise extends to high-tech mission equipment and C4I solutions, catering to a broad range of military requirements.
Indra brings significant experience in servicing and producing the “Combat System Leopard 2.” The company also develops its own electro-optics, battle management systems (BMS ET and Lince), and mission systems (Maestre), which support platforms such as the Leopard 2 E main battle tank, the Pizarro infantry fighting vehicle, and the VCR 8×8 wheeled armoured vehicle.
Rheinmetall, meanwhile, is known for its modern, fully digitalised defence electronics and software. Its modular and open system architecture enables a range of innovative capabilities, including automated operations, integration of weapons and anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), network connectivity, and both manned and unmanned operational modes.
The agreement comes at a time when Spain, along with other NATO and EU member states, is increasing defence spending to enhance the readiness of combat vehicle fleets. This renewed cooperation between Indra and Rheinmetall positions them at the forefront of next-generation armoured warfare solutions.
