Indra Group USA has been awarded a $342 million contract by the Federal Aviation Administration to manufacture next-generation air traffic surveillance radars under the FAA’s Radar System Replacement programme. The systems will be produced at the company’s new manufacturing facility in the Kansas City area.

The contract supports the FAA’s Brand-New Air Traffic Control System initiative, which aims to modernise the National Airspace System by replacing ageing surveillance infrastructure. The programme is intended to enhance safety, reliability and operational performance through resilient and cyber-secure technology deployed nationwide.

Indra’s industrial proposal sets out a phased manufacturing approach aligned with FAA deployment timelines and supported by the wider Indra Group. This approach will significantly expand the company’s manufacturing capabilities in the Kansas City area while drawing on its global industrial network.

Angel Escribano, Chairman of Indra Group, said: “Modernizing the National Airspace System is first and foremost about safety, reliability and public trust.” He added: “Indra is proud to bring to this effort our proven, field-tested technology, a strong record of execution, and a deep commitment to manufacturing and growing in the United States.”

The company has announced a $50 million investment in facilities in the Kansas City area, supporting the creation of more than 200 skilled jobs across engineering, manufacturing, deployment and system support. The investment is intended to strengthen the domestic industrial base and ensure long-term lifecycle support and scalability for critical air traffic infrastructure.

José Vicente de los Mozos, Chief Executive of Indra Group, said: “Our investment in Kansas, the creation of more than 200 high-quality American jobs, and the transfer of advanced radar technology to the U.S. reflect our long-term commitment to America and to the FAA as the world’s leading air navigation service provider.” He added: “We are fully aligned with the FAA, the U.S. Department of Transportation, Congress, and the Administration in delivering a safer, more resilient, and future-ready National Airspace System, on time, at scale, and with accountability to the American taxpayer.”

Indra’s radar systems are based on surveillance technology already used by air navigation service providers in countries including the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and New Zealand. They are designed to integrate with existing FAA automation platforms while supporting future airspace requirements such as increased traffic volumes and advanced air mobility operations.

Technology transfer will play a central role in the Radar System Replacement programme, with Indra transferring manufacturing processes and product expertise to the United States. This approach mirrors the model previously implemented for its NEXCOM v3 air-ground communications radios to support long-term domestic production and sustainment.

Roger Marshall said: “This announcement is not only a great source of pride for Kansas, but for the nation as well.” He added: “I want to congratulate Indra on earning this contract and look forward to a great Kansas company being at the forefront of aviation safety.”
