Indra successfully tests Nemus active defence radar on Leopard 2 main battle tank

By Defence Industry Europe

Spanish defence company Indra has successfully tested its Nemus active protection radar on Leopard battle tanks at the Spanish Army’s Armored Units Instruction Center (CENAD) in Zaragoza. The trials were conducted in the presence of Brigadier General Luis Sanz Muñoz, director of procurement at the Army’s Logistics Command (MALE), alongside Army personnel and Indra engineers.

The purpose of the tests was to confirm the radar’s integration capability with the Leopard platform. These exercises followed earlier trials conducted by Indra in July at the Army’s Radio Evaluation and Experimentation Center (CEAR) in Guadalajara.

Nemus is an AESA electronic scanning radar specifically designed for installation on mechanised vehicles and tanks. It is capable of detecting, identifying and tracking drones, micro-drones, and a wide range of projectiles, including anti-tank missiles, grenade launchers, and supersonic arrow-type munitions.

The system automatically activates countermeasures to neutralise threats and is equipped with intelligence to distinguish false targets. It is also resistant to jamming attempts and can function under extreme environmental conditions, including intense humidity, cold, and heat.

Indra highlights Nemus as the most advanced system of its kind in Europe and one of the few developed on the continent. “This technology developed by Indra is key to guaranteeing the sovereignty and autonomy of any European army,” the company stated.

It is particularly critical for modern conflict zones, where low-cost drones pose a serious threat to high-value military assets like the Leopard tank. The Nemus radar plays a central role in enabling effective intervention in such environments.

The system is part of Indra’s broader strategy to digitise military vehicles and integrate advanced intelligence capabilities. The company has expanded its presence in the land defence sector through its acquisition of Tess Defence and the promotion of its Indra Land Vehicles subsidiary.
