Israel Aerospace Industries delivers 250th Multi-Mission Radar, marks global milestone in air defence

By Defence Industry Europe

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has delivered its 250th multi-mission radar (MMR), marking a significant achievement for the Israeli defence technology leader. The radar system, developed by IAI’s ELTA Group, has been central to Israel’s air defence and instrumental in intercepting tens of thousands of airborne threats since October 2023.

The MMR is deployed in all four of Israel’s key air defence systems—Barak MX, Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Spyder—and is described by IAI as the most operational and best-selling radar of its kind globally. It provides simultaneous, high-quality detection, classification and targeting of a wide variety of aerial threats, including low-signature and fast-moving projectiles.

“IAI’s MMR radars are a central part in all of Israel’s main air defense systems and have proven their effectiveness and accuracy over the years, time and time again, thereby saving many lives,” said Boaz Levy, President and CEO of IAI. “During the current war, we accelerated the production capabilities of IAI’s defense systems and provided the State of Israel and our customers worldwide with the most advanced response to protecting human life.”

The radars have been used to detect and alert on every missile and rocket fired at Israel since the outbreak of hostilities nearly two years ago. They are also operational in more than 20 countries across five continents, with total sales exceeding 7 billion US dollars.

Integrated with NATO and other command systems, the MMR uses AI and machine learning to detect hundreds of targets simultaneously, including ballistic and cruise missiles, UAVs, drones, and rockets. The radar guides interceptors with precision, contributing to Israel’s defensive success in real-time threat environments.

Levy added: “We are proud of the collaborations we have created with our allies globally, which testify to the deep realization that sharing knowledge and technology is a key component in defending against existing and future threats.”

Initially deployed in 2009, the radar system has received two Israel Defense Prizes for its development and operational excellence. The MMR’s long-range S-band capabilities, supported by additional active and passive sensors, allow for accurate threat identification even in dense or cluttered airspaces.

IAI highlighted that the evolving battlefield and rise in unmanned systems, loitering munitions, and enhanced missile technologies have driven demand for improved aerial defence. The company’s radar technology has adapted to meet these complex challenges by enhancing detection precision, imagery accuracy, and system survivability.
