Israel Aerospace Industries unveils revolutionary TEASER guided missile system

By Lukasz Prus, Defence Industry Europe

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has officially unveiled the TEASER, a revolutionary guided missile system that introduces a first-of-its-kind external optical guidance technology without the use of a homing sensor. This new system, known as Automatic Command to Line-of-Sight (ACLOS), offers an affordable, precise, and reliable solution tailored to the modern battlefield, especially for infantry units. The TEASER system was developed to enhance the capability of ground forces, providing them with a versatile and cost-effective guided weapon that meets a variety of operational needs.

The TEASER missile is capable of engaging a range of targets, including ground positions, light structures, lightly armoured vehicles, low-altitude aerial threats, and moving targets. Configurable to meet the specific requirements of its users, it guarantees mission success in a variety of combat scenarios. Additionally, the system does not rely on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), allowing for increased independence in battlefield operations and greater ease of use. This capability ensures that ground forces can effectively confront emerging threats with minimal external dependencies.

A key innovation of the TEASER system is its use of an external optical guidance system, known as the TEASER-SIGHT, to direct the missile to its target. This eliminates the need for a traditional homing sensor, reducing both the weight and cost of the missile. The TEASER-SIGHT can also connect to external sensors, increasing its reliability, versatility, and survivability in combat. The system’s two-stage motor, which includes an ejection stage and a booster, allows for safe back-blast, enabling soldiers to fire the missile from enclosed areas, a crucial advantage in urban and confined battlefield environments.

The TEASER missile system offers two operational modes: shoulder-launched and remote-launched. In the shoulder-launched mode, a single soldier can carry the TEASER-SIGHT and missile, offering mobility and ease of use in dynamic combat situations. In remote-launch mode, multiple TEASER missiles can be deployed from a launcher placed on terrain or a vehicle, with the operator controlling the system from a separate location via a Ground Control Station (GCS). This flexibility allows for continuous fire support and enables the system to be used for a variety of purposes, such as border defence, while keeping operators at a safe distance from potential threats.

Colonel (ret.) Jacob Galifat, General Manager of IAI’s MALAM Division, expressed pride in the addition of the TEASER system to IAI’s already extensive missile portfolio. He highlighted how TEASER meets a critical need for battalion-level tactical teams, providing them with an independent, guided, and affordable lethal capability that is unmatched in performance. The system represents a significant advancement in the field of infantry weapons and underscores IAI’s leadership in defence innovation.
