Israel and Germany begin preparations for Arrow 3 missile defence system delivery

By Defence Industry Europe

German lawmakers have authorized advance payments of up to 560 million euros ahead of the planned purchase of Israel's Arrow 3 missile defense system. The system, designed to intercept ballistic missiles outside of the Earth's atmosphere, serves as the top layer of Israel's comprehensive missile defence array. The decision comes as Germany aims to bolster its defense capabilities and address the shortage of ground-based air defense systems in many Western nations amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Israel and Germany have officially begun preparations for the delivery of the Arrow 3 missile defence system to the German Armed Forces. This marks a significant milestone in what is the largest defence export deal in Israel’s history.

A high-level coordination meeting was recently held in Germany to advance the delivery process. The meeting was led by Moshe Patel, Head of the Israel Missile Defense Organization (IMDO); Colonel Carsten Koepper, Head of the Arrow 3 Program for Germany; and Yaakov Galifat, General Manager of the MLM Division at Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

Senior representatives from both nations’ defence industries participated in the session. Among them were teams from IAI’s MLM Division, ELTA Systems Ltd, Elbit Systems, and the German firms IABG and MBDA.

The Arrow weapon system, developed jointly by Israel and the United States, includes both Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 interceptors. It is designed to neutralise long-range ballistic missiles outside the Earth’s atmosphere.

The Arrow system has demonstrated its effectiveness in combat, notably during missile attacks on 14 April and 1 October 2024. It continues to protect Israel by intercepting multiple threats launched from Yemen by Iranian-backed Houthi militants.

Moshe Patel emphasised the importance of the collaboration, stating, “The delivery of the Arrow 3 system to Germany is a significant step in our strategic partnership and in strengthening Europe’s defence capabilities.” He also noted the successful progress being made: “We are advancing according to the agreed timelines.”
