Italian Army evaluates Lynx KF41 in advanced combat vehicle trials

By Defence Industry Europe

The Italian Army has taken a significant step in its modernisation programme with the arrival of the Lynx KF41 armoured infantry fighting vehicle at the Army Multipurpose Testing Centre. The vehicle will undergo rigorous verification, testing, and technical evaluation to assess its mobility, protection, firepower, and interoperability.

This testing phase is part of the Italian Army’s Armoured Infantry Combat System (AICS) programme, which aims to procure over 1,000 armoured combat systems across 16 variants. The modular design of the Lynx KF41 makes it suitable for diverse roles, such as infantry fighting, troop transport, mobile command post, and ambulance configurations. These tests are conducted by Army engineers and test pilots at Cepolispe, which operates under the Army Logistics Command.

The Lynx KF41 serves as a cornerstone of the AICS programme and is integral to a broader collaboration between Rheinmetall AG and Leonardo S.p.A., two leading European defence technology companies. In October2024, the companies announced the formation of Leonardo Rheinmetall Military Vehicles (LRMV), a 50-50 joint venture aimed at developing and marketing cutting-edge military vehicles for Italy and international markets.

Headquartered in Rome with operational facilities in La Spezia, LRMV is tasked with developing a new main battle tank (MBT) to replace the Ariete, alongside the Lynx-based combat systems. The Panther KF51, another advanced platform from Rheinmetall, will serve as the basis for the new MBT. Leonardo will focus on mission systems, electronics, and weapons integration tailored to Italian Army specifications, while Rheinmetall brings its expertise in modular vehicle design.

This collaboration is expected to create a “new heavyweight in European tank production,” according to Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG. Approximately 60% of production activities, including final assembly, homologation testing, and logistics support, will take place in Italy, bolstering the local defence industry and creating significant economic opportunities.

Leonardo CEO Roberto Cingolani described the partnership as a major milestone in building a European defence system based on shared platforms and state-of-the-art technologies. Both companies see the joint venture as an opportunity to meet Italy’s defence needs while offering innovative solutions to partner nations seeking to modernise their combat systems.

The Italian Army’s AICS programme, combined with LRMV’s efforts, highlights a strategic push towards enhanced operational capability and technological self-sufficiency. The outcome of the Lynx KF41 tests will be closely watched as a precursor to the broader deployment of next-generation combat vehicles in Italy and beyond.
