On 29 October, the Italian Ministry of Defence announced approval for the third batch purchase of Leonardo AW249 combat helicopters, which will be delivered to the Army Aviation branch. The planned order includes 29 serial-production helicopters and a training and logistics package, with an estimated total cost of €1.2 billion.

All helicopters will be delivered in operational configuration, with the contract expected to be signed in the coming weeks to enable deliveries starting in 2027. The accelerated timeline is linked to Leonardo’s launch of a final assembly line for the aircraft.

To date, under two previous contracts, Italy has ordered 19 AW249s, including one prototype and three pre-serial helicopters delivered for testing purposes. Leonardo aims for at least 48 total orders, which would allow the AW249 to fully replace the ageing AW129 Mangusta fleet.

Beyond its role in Italy’s military modernisation, Leonardo is actively promoting the AW249 on the international market. The helicopter was showcased at the 2024 Eurosatory defence exhibition and at the Paris Air Show this year, with Central European and Asian countries identified as potential buyers.
