Italy orders additional 14 HIMARS rocket artillery systems

By Defence industry Europe

The Italian defence procurement agency has finalised the acquisition of 14 additional High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) for the Italian Army. This procurement brings the total number of HIMARS launchers under contract to 21, along with specialised technical support for their integration into service.

The programme initially began in February 2024 with an order for seven HIMARS launchers, contracted through the U.S. government agency Strategic Operational Rocket Missile (STORM). This latest acquisition completes the planned procurement and adheres to the Italian Army’s operational requirements.

The HIMARS systems play a pivotal role in the “Italian Army Operational Concept 2020-2035” and the “Army 4.0” initiative. These frameworks aim to enhance the Army’s non-contact manoeuvre capabilities, expand firepower projection, and provide greater operational flexibility.
