Kirtland Air Force Base enhances readiness with installation of global aircrew communications system

By Defence Industry Europe

In April 2024, Kirtland Air Force Base reached a significant milestone with the installation of the Global Aircrew Strategic Network Terminal (GASNT) at the 377th Air Base Wing Command Post. The USD 600 million upgrade modernises Cold War-era communication systems, ensuring reliable connectivity for both nuclear and non-nuclear operations.

GASNT utilises the Advanced Extremely High Frequency and MILSTAR satellite networks, providing advanced encryption and multi-frequency capabilities. These enhancements improve resilience and redundancy, offering protection against jamming and cyber threats in increasingly complex operational environments.

Hardened against electromagnetic pulses and capable of functioning in austere or Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) conditions, GASNT ensures continuous communication. It links aircrews, command centres, and support teams seamlessly, even under extreme circumstances.

The new system significantly strengthens the U.S. Air Force Global Strike Command’s ability to execute missions assigned by U.S. Strategic Command. “GASNT exemplifies innovation, reinforcing the nation’s readiness amidst evolving global threats,” a spokesperson emphasised.

Supporting Joint All Domain Command and Control initiatives, GASNT delivers real-time, critical data to decision-makers. This upgrade highlights the U.S. military’s commitment to maintaining robust and secure communication systems, vital to national defence and strategic operations.
