KNDS Deutschland details contract with Sweden for Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks

By Defence Industry Europe

Sweden has finalised a significant agreement with German defence manufacturer KNDS Deutschland for the acquisition of 44 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks. This new fleet will be part of Sweden’s ongoing modernisation of its armoured vehicle inventory, extending upgrades to all 110 existing Leopard 2 systems in the country’s arsenal, KNDS Deutschland said in a press release.

The contracts were finalised in two phases, facilitated by Sweden’s Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) in Munich. The initial agreement, signed on 6 November 2024, covered the purchase of 24 Leopard 2A8 tanks. A follow-up contract for an additional 20 tanks was concluded on 19 December 2024, securing Sweden’s commitment to the cutting-edge military platform.

The new tanks will replace systems previously donated to Ukraine, where Sweden transferred ten Leopard 2 tanks as part of its support for the war effort. Deliveries of the new Leopard 2A8 units, to be known as the Stridsvagn 123 B (STRV 123 B) in Sweden, are set to commence in the latter half of 2027.

In addition to the acquisition, the broader modernisation programme aims to bring 66 of Sweden’s Leopard 2 systems up to a higher operational standard. Upgrades will include enhanced protection, advanced weaponry, new operational systems, improved mobility solutions, and increased digitalisation. The addition of an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) will further extend the vehicles’ tactical capabilities.

Modernisation work is scheduled to begin in 2028, after the delivery phase of the newly manufactured tanks is completed. These efforts are expected to reinforce Sweden’s military capabilities significantly, ensuring compatibility with the latest battlefield demands and aligning with NATO standards.
