KNDS Deutschland has presented the first two Leopard 2A8 tanks for Germany and Norway at a roll out event attended by Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, Bavaria’s Minister President Markus Söder, Norwegian State Secretary for Defence Marte Gerhardsen and Army Inspector Christian Freuding. The vehicles mark the start of serial production for the newest version of the nearly 70 tonne main battle tank.

Germany has ordered 123 Leopard 2A8 tanks and Norway 54, with the model built as a complete new construction featuring upgraded protection, electronics, optronics and armament. The Bundeswehr placed its first order for 18 units in July 2023 after transferring 18 Leopard 2A6 to Ukraine and added a further 105 in July 2024.

The Leopard 2A8 includes the Trophy active protection system from Rafael, which intercepts incoming projectiles before impact to improve survivability for crew and vehicle. Four radar antennas and two launchers identify the system, while the turret roof has been fitted with additional bomblet protection.

A fully digital fire control system and updated day and night sight channels for commander and gunner improve reconnaissance and combat effectiveness. The vehicle also provides fused optical and thermal panoramic vision to enhance situational awareness for the driver and crew.

The 120mm/L55A1 gun system supports programmable high explosive ammunition and the latest kinetic energy rounds. According to the manufacturer, this allows armoured targets to be engaged at ranges of up to five kilometres.

The Leopard 2A8 will soon enter integrated verification testing by the Bundeswehr and BAAINBw in cooperation with industry. From 2027 it will equip Panzerbrigade 45 in Lithuania, with all 123 German tanks scheduled for delivery by 2030.

A second highlight of the event was the roll out of the upgraded PzH 2000A4, of which the Bundeswehr has ordered 22 following transfers to Ukraine. The updated howitzers feature improvements in electronics, fire control, handling and a new power unit, along with regeneration of on board computers including the new Centurion fire control system.

The PzH 2000A4 will also undergo integrated verification before serial approval. Deliveries are planned between 2026 and 2029.
