Under the agreement, Kongsberg will act as prime contractor for work carried out on the vessels. Navantia will provide design, engineering and platform support, drawing on its role as the original designer, integrator and builder of the frigates.
“The Fridtjof Nansen-class frigates are a key capability for the Royal Norwegian Navy. This agreement combines Kongsberg’s lifecycle support capabilities with Navantia’s extensive knowledge of the platform, while further strengthening industrial cooperation between Norway and Spain in the naval defence sector,” said Tom Dahl, Senior Manager Business Development at Kongsberg.
The scope of the agreement includes maintenance activities, modifications and technical upgrades. Kongsberg said the work is intended to support the continued availability and development of the frigate fleet.
Navantia’s role is based on its knowledge of the frigates’ design, systems and platform architecture. The company built and integrated the vessels and will support future work through engineering and platform expertise.
The agreement was signed in Bergen. Representatives from Kongsberg, Navantia and the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency attended the signing.
