The Norwegian defence company has long been a provider of advanced space technology, but this marks the first time it will own and operate satellites. Eirik Lie, President of Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, described the launch as a milestone, positioning the company as both a satellite operator and service provider.
Kongsberg and its subsidiaries now offer a complete satellite service, from manufacturing and ground station operations to data processing and analytics. By integrating space and ground systems, the company aims to improve data delivery speeds and reduce latency for customers.
In 2024, Kongsberg secured a five-year contract with the Norwegian Armed Forces on behalf of the Norwegian government to provide maritime surveillance data. As part of this agreement, the company will launch three satellites to enhance monitoring across Norwegian waters.
These satellites, known as MP42H, are built by Kongsberg NanoAvionics and are equipped with Automatic Identification System (AIS) receivers and advanced detector systems. They also include a radar detector developed by the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) to improve maritime tracking capabilities.
Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) will operate the satellites using its international network of ground stations. This system will provide real-time surveillance data to the Norwegian Government and international customers, supporting maritime security and defence operations.
