Full funding for the procurement was released at the time of signing and covers not only the missiles themselves but also diagnostic equipment and a necessary logistics package. Deliveries will be carried out from the Norwegian manufacturer’s production facilities located in Norway.
The first tranche of missiles was procured in two phases, in May 2024 and January 2025. Deliveries of this initial batch are to be completed by the end of September 2027, with the United States Air Force as the end user.
Developed by Kongsberg, the JSM is the only anti-ship missile system capable of being carried internally by the F-35A and F-35C Lightning II aircraft. Certification of the missile for both variants is expected to take place soon.
This achievement by the Norwegian manufacturer is linked to Norway’s participation in the F-35 Lightning II development programme at Level III. In addition to Norway and the United States, the JSM has also been purchased by other F-35A operators, including Japan, which received its first batch in mid-2021, and Finland, while Poland has expressed interest.
Beyond engaging surface targets, the JSM can also strike land-based objectives, following the example of the Naval Strike Missile. This multi-role capability broadens its potential use across different operational scenarios.
