L3Harris completes key milestone in missile defence programme with infrared payload delivery

L3Harris Technologies has successfully delivered its first infrared payload for the Space Development Agency's (SDA) Tranche 1 Tracking Layer programme. This state-of-the-art technology is designed to track advanced manoeuvring missiles, including hypersonic glide vehicles, in real time.

L3Harris Technologies has successfully delivered its first infrared payload for the Space Development Agency's (SDA) Tranche 1 Tracking Layer programme. This state-of-the-art technology is designed to track advanced manoeuvring missiles, including hypersonic glide vehicles, in real time.

 

The delivery follows the completion of a Test Readiness Review (TRR), which confirmed that the payload and other subsystems meet stringent standards. This achievement enables the payload to progress to space vehicle integration and testing ahead of its planned launch.

The infrared payload is part of an $800-million project to develop a 16-satellite constellation for the SDA’s Tranche 1 Tracking Layer programme. The satellites aim to enhance missile detection and tracking capabilities, strengthening national defence against complex threats.

“Our infrared payload enables SDA’s efforts to accelerate our nation’s missile warning and defence capabilities,” said Rob Mitrevski, Vice President and General Manager of Spectral Solutions at L3Harris. “This advanced technology will provide the eyes-in-the-sky for our warfighters to defend against advanced missile threats.
