Leonardo DRS wins USD 235 million contract to supply AN/SPQ-9B radars for U.S. Navy

By Defence Industry Europe

Leonardo DRS has announced a significant contract win from NAVSEA to produce its ship-based AN/SPQ-9B radars. This contract, including potential options exercised over five years, could total more than $235 million in value.

As part of this agreement, Leonardo DRS will handle the manufacturing, inspection, and testing of the AN/SPQ-9B radars, along with providing associated spare kits.

“The SPQ-9B radar is a vital ship protection system used across the fleet, and we are proud that the U.S. Navy continues to entrust us to produce this important defensive technology,” said Cari Ossenfort, senior vice president and general manager of Leonardo DRS Naval Electronics.

The AN/SPQ-9B radar, an X-band, pulse Doppler system, is frequency-agile and designed for challenging littoral environments. It boasts low false track rates and can detect and track various threats, including low-flying anti-ship cruise missiles, surface threats, UAVs, and helicopters, automatically scanning to the horizon.

Leonardo DRS has been supporting the AN/SPQ-9B radar for over six years, showcasing its expertise in complex design and manufacturing. This contract is part of Leonardo DRS’s broader capabilities in providing advanced RF and electronic warfare systems, with contributions spanning naval, ground, air, space, and cyber missions.
