Northrop Grumman Corporation and the Lithuanian Ministries of Defence and Finance have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to expand the co-production of medium-calibre ammunition. The agreement aims to strengthen Lithuania’s defence manufacturing and improve supply chains critical to national and allied security.

The MOU outlines cooperation with Nammo Defense Systems and supports accelerated ammunition delivery for Lithuania and NATO allies. It also marks a significant step in advancing local industrial capabilities in support of Ukraine and regional stability.

“This MOU is essential for the development of the national division by 2030 and for strengthening the capabilities of the Lithuanian Armed Forces,” said Lithuania’s defence minister Dovile Šakalienė. “It will enhance national strategic autonomy in defence and deepen partnerships with NATO allies the United States and Norway.”

Lithuanian finance minister Rimantas Šadžius highlighted the broader security benefits of the initiative. “The investment and expertise of our allies in the USA and Norway in the implementation of this ammunition production project with Giraites Ginkluotes Gamykla (Giraite Armaments Plant) will significantly contribute to strengthening of the national defense industry and security not only in Lithuania, but also in the entire region, including Ukraine,” he said.

Vice Minister of Defence Loreta Maskalioviene stressed the long-term strategic value of the cooperation. “By strengthening our national defense industry, we are investing in both technological capabilities and Lithuania’s resilience to crises,” she stated. “This will allow us to better equip our armed forces and help Lithuania become an important link in international supply chains.”

Steve O’Bryan, corporate vice president and global business development officer at Northrop Grumman, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to NATO cooperation. “This is another example of Northrop Grumman’s commitment to international defense partnerships that advance NATO capabilities,” he said. “This collaboration both expedites delivery of a critical defense need and delivers sustained industrial benefits to the United States and Lithuania.”

Nammo CEO Morten Brandtzæg also welcomed the agreement. “Nammo is delighted to be part of this initiative,” he commented. “Together with Lithuania and Northrop Grumman, we will work to strengthen and expand the industrial base and supply allied defense.”

Northrop Grumman is a long-standing producer of medium-calibre ammunition used across land, sea, and air platforms. The company’s products are designed for versatility and precision in a wide range of combat applications, including anti-armor, air defence and ground suppression.
