The creation of LTCYBERCOM highlights Lithuania’s commitment to enhancing interoperability with NATO, the National Defence System, and other institutions. By centralising cyber defence efforts, the unit will play a vital role in safeguarding national security against emerging digital threats.
“The Lithuanian Cyber Command is critical as an enabler of military planning and action coordination in cyberspace. Many NATO Allies have already embraced similar approaches,” stated Vice Minister of National Defence Tomas Godliauskas. “Strengthening cyber defence and effective cyber incident management are key steps in protecting the state’s security.”
LTCYBERCOM comprises the Command Headquarters, the Lithuanian Great Hetman Kristupas Radvila Perkūnas CIS Battalion, and the newly restructured IT Service of the Cyber Defence Command. The restructuring has merged existing IT capabilities under LTCYBERCOM’s mandate while delegating residual functions to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the Core Centre of State Telecommunications.
Established by the Seimas in July 2024 following amendments to the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ principal structure, LTCYBERCOM consolidates cyber expertise to address the evolving challenges of the digital landscape. The NCSC will continue to provide services as Lithuania’s national cyber security agency.
