Lithuania signs contracts for tactical radios and small drones from the U.S.

By Defence Industry Europe

The Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence has announced new agreements with the U.S. Government to enhance the capabilities of its armed forces. The Defence Materiel Agency (DMA) has secured contracts for manpack radios and small uncrewed aerial systems (UAS), underlining Lithuania’s commitment to strengthening its defence infrastructure.

Two contracts worth approximately USD 25 million will deliver advanced L3Harris manpack radios by the end of 2024. These radios will be integrated into Lithuania’s Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTV) and Vilkas Infantry Fighting Vehicles, ensuring seamless communication in modern military operations.

Additionally, the DMA has signed a contract worth USD 7.8 million (excluding VAT) for small UAS from U.S. manufacturer AeroVironment Inc. These vertical take-off drones, designed for fire control and adjustment, will complement the Switchblade 600 combat drones already in Lithuania’s arsenal.

The UAS are expected to be delivered by the end of 2025, with plans for further procurement in the future. This acquisition aligns with Lithuania’s strategic focus on integrating cutting-edge technologies into its defence capabilities.

Lithuania continues to lead the Baltic states in the procurement of U.S. military equipment, with purchases totalling USD 1.3 billion in the medium term. Notable acquisitions include Javelin anti-tank missiles, Black Hawk helicopters, HIMARS rocket systems, and NASAMS air defence components, among others.
