Lithuanian and U.S. forces conduct joint live-fire drills with HIMARS rocket artillery system

On 5 June, U.S. Marines and Lithuanian Land Force troops from the Salvo Artillery Battery conducted live-fire drills using HIMARS rocket artillery systems, targeting areas in the Baltic Sea. These joint exercises are part of preparations for integrating HIMARS into the Lithuanian Land Force structure.

“The HIMARS rocket artillery systems will enable the Lithuanian Armed Forces to strike targets at longer distances and generate effects deep in a potential aggressor’s rear,” said Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, General Raimundas Vaikšnoras. “We train with U.S. troops to manage the systems effectively and ensure proper personnel readiness before we receive the procured HIMARS systems. Such exercises are a great example of Lithuania-U.S. cooperation, demonstrating our strategic unity and high readiness to defend our homeland.”

The drills on 5–6 June at the Brigadier General Povilas Plechavičius Training Area are part of the international exercise BALTOPS 2025, taking place from 3–20 June. Lithuanian Navy vessels N42 Jotvingis, M54 Kuršis, and P12 Dzūkas are also participating in the broader exercise.

Under the exercise scenario, HIMARS systems were relocated to Lithuania to provide indirect fire support to the participating naval units. The rockets flew over the Curonian Lagoon and the Curonian Spit, landing in the Baltic Sea approximately 15 kilometres from the launch point.

Maritime safety during the drills was ensured by the Lithuanian Navy vessel P-15 Sėlis and a high-speed boat from the Port and Coastal Defence Service, while Military Police maintained safety on land. During the live fire, restrictions were imposed on traffic in the Curonian Spit, maritime navigation, airspace use, and access to the Kairiai Training Area.

This marks the second time HIMARS live-fire drills have been conducted in Lithuania. Lithuanian Salvo Artillery Battery troops participated alongside U.S. personnel, learning to prepare HIMARS systems for combat firing and observing the execution of fire missions.

The Lithuanian troops also gained experience in command and control, and improved their skills in operating, maintaining, and inspecting HIMARS systems. The exercises are part of the U.S. Army-led European HIMARS Initiative, which includes countries that possess or intend to acquire HIMARS systems.

Within this initiative, U.S. military representatives share expertise related to HIMARS operation, sustainment, and combat training. Lithuania, together with Estonia and Latvia, is actively involved to ensure rapid and effective readiness for achieving full operational capability.
