Lockheed Martin: European GMARS rocket launcher achieves first successful live fire

By Defence Industry Europe

Lockheed Martin and Rheinmetall have successfully completed the first live fire test of the Global Mobile Artillery Rocket System (GMARS) launcher. The test took place at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico and marked a key milestone in the development of the new long-range precision fires system.

The GMARS launcher demonstrated its ability to fire Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) rockets, the same munitions used by the United States and allied forces globally. This confirms its interoperability with existing NATO platforms and supports joint operational capabilities.

The system, which can be armed with two ATACMS, four PrSM, or up to twelve GMLRS standard or extended range missiles, is designed to provide military customers with a mobile, survivable and versatile solution. It is built on the Rheinmetall HX vehicle series and offers compatibility with fielded M270A2 and HIMARS systems.

“Lockheed Martin is committed to delivering innovative solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers,” said Paula Hartley, vice president and general manager of Tactical Missiles at Lockheed Martin. “The GMARS program is a prime example of this commitment, and we are pleased to have successfully demonstrated its capability in this live fire exercise.”

With the live fire now complete, the companies aim to accelerate qualification and delivery of the launcher to global markets. GMARS is expected to strengthen long-range precision strike options for NATO forces and partner nations.

“We are thrilled to have achieved this major milestone in the GMARS program,” said Dr. Björn Bernhard, CEO Rheinmetall Vehicle Systems Europe. “The successful live fire showcases the system’s precision and reliability, and we are confident that GMARS will meet the evolving needs of our customers.”

The GMARS program leverages proven components from HIMARS and M270 systems while enabling integration with allied platforms and munitions. It delivers M270’s munition capacity on a wheeled platform optimised for European theatre requirements.
