Lockheed Martin secures contract for ATACMS missiles for Poland and the Baltics countries

By Defence Industry Europe

The United States Department of Defence signed an agreement with Lockheed Martin for the delivery of MGM-140 ATACMS tactical missiles to several international buyers. This USD 227 million contract is set to be fulfilled by the end of 2028.

The funding for this project has been fully secured at the time of signing, with all financial resources provided by the international customers purchasing the weaponry through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) procedure. According to the US Department of Defence, the recipients of these advanced missiles include Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, and Morocco.

The ATACMS (Army Tactical Missile System) is a long-range, guided missile system designed to give commanders immediate firepower, thus enabling them to influence the battlespace effectively. Each missile is housed in an MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket System) launch pod, allowing it to be launched from the MLRS family of launchers, including the HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) and MLRS M270 platforms.

Noteworthy features of the ATACMS include an improved guidance package incorporating the Global Positioning System (GPS), and it is armed with a WDU18, 500-pound class blast fragmentation warhead. The missile boasts a maximum range of 300 kilometres, significantly extending the reach of conventional surface-to-surface artillery weapons and providing a considerable tactical advantage over existing Army cannons, rockets, and other missiles.
