Massive potential deal for GDLS: Washington approves modernisation package for Egyptian Abrams tanks

By Defence Industry Europe

The United States Department of State has authorised the sale of a comprehensive modernisation package for Egypt’s fleet of M1A1 Abrams tanks. The deal, valued at up to USD 4.69 billion, will be conducted through the Foreign Military Sales programme.

The Egyptian government has requested the overhaul and upgrade of 555 M1A1 tanks to the M1A1SA configuration. The package includes advanced equipment such as 555 AN/VAS-5B DVE-A thermal vision cameras for drivers, an equal number of Thermal Imaging System gunner sights, M250 smoke grenade launchers, AGT-1500 gas turbines, and X-1100 transmissions.

In addition to the tank upgrades, the US has approved the sale of spare parts, support equipment, and repair components. The package also includes engineering, technical, and logistical assistance to ensure the smooth implementation of the modernisation process.

The primary contractor for the potential deal is expected to be General Dynamics Land Systems. However, the agreement does not include offset provisions, making it a straightforward transaction focused on Egypt’s military needs.
