MilDef unveils Dismounted Soldier System for enhanced battlefield awareness

By Defence Industry Europe

Swedish defence company MilDef has announced the launch of its cutting-edge Dismounted Soldier System (DSS), designed to improve situational awareness and operational efficiency for individual soldiers in demanding combat environments. The system was introduced at the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) convention in Washington, D.C., where attendees were given an opportunity to explore its capabilities.

The MilDef DSS is a comprehensive suite of hardware and software components developed to withstand the rigours of modern warfare. Tailored to enhance performance in extreme conditions, including harsh terrains and high-stress combat scenarios, the system has been crafted with input from experienced military personnel. It aims to provide soldiers with the tools needed to achieve mission success, regardless of the challenges they face.

MilDef’s DSS stands out for its adaptability, offering seamless integration with both new and existing platforms, such as communication radios and other mission-critical systems. According to Fredrik Persson, Chief Technology Officer and Deputy CEO of MilDef Group, the system is “hardware and software agnostic,” allowing it to easily work with third-party solutions and battle management systems. This flexibility ensures that the DSS is future-proof, capable of evolving alongside technological advances and the changing demands of the battlefield.

Key components of the MilDef DSS suite include:

  • Tactical Android Device (T.A.D.) End User Device: A rugged, durable Android-based device with 5G and WiFi 6 connectivity, night vision support, and a battery life exceeding 24 hours. Designed for harsh conditions, it complies with military standards (MIL-STD-810/IP67) and can connect to multiple ethernet devices.
  • MilDef DSS HUB: A versatile six-port USB 2.0 hub designed to manage power and data connections, with multiple ports and connectors that meet NATO standards.
  • OneCIS: A system designed for the rapid and automated deployment of operating systems, network configurations, applications, and services, ensuring quick readiness in the field.

MilDef has a long-standing reputation for providing tactical systems to military platforms. The introduction of the Dismounted Soldier System is seen as a natural extension of its expertise, further enhancing the capabilities of soldiers in the field. By integrating with government-furnished equipment (GFE) and existing technology, the system promises to boost operational effectiveness and coordination, delivering a crucial advantage when stakes are highest.
