On 9 April, the French Air and Space Force officially marked the entry into operational service of the upgraded Mirage 2000D combat aircraft during a ceremony held at Nancy-Ochey Air Base. The upgrade project, commissioned by the French defence procurement agency (DGA), involved the modernisation of 50 aircraft previously dedicated to precision strikes against ground targets using conventional weaponry.

The mid-life upgrade programme, known as Rénovation Mi-Vie (RMV), began in 2016 with the goal of transforming the Mirage 2000D into a multirole fighter capable of operating alongside the newer Rafale aircraft. According to the Air and Space Force, the enhancements will enable the aircraft to remain operational for at least another ten years.

Key improvements include the integration of a fixed 30mm cannon and the addition of MICA IR air-to-air missiles, significantly expanding the aircraft’s combat capabilities. The modernised jets have also been adapted to carry precision-guided bombs such as the GBU-48 and GBU-50, broadening their operational versatility.

The cockpit systems have been completely overhauled, featuring a more intuitive and digital interface to enhance pilot situational awareness. “Thanks to the new onboard architecture and improved ergonomics, pilots can now better manage complex missions, especially in environments saturated with modern air-defence systems,” stated a spokesperson from the French Air and Space Force.

These modernised Mirage 2000D aircraft are now considered a key component of France’s airpower, ready to support national and international missions if required. In scenarios involving extended-range operations, the fighters can rely on in-flight refuelling support from Airbus A330 MRTT or A400M Atlas aircraft equipped with hose-and-drogue systems.
