NATO acquires advanced AI-enabled warfighting system from American company Palantir Technologies

By Defence Industry Europe

NATO has officially acquired the Maven Smart System NATO (MSS NATO), an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) platform developed by Palantir Technologies Inc., to support Allied Command Operations (ACO). The agreement, finalised on 25 March 2025 by the NATO Communications and Information Agency (NCIA) and Palantir, marks a significant step in modernising NATO’s military capabilities.

MSS NATO is designed to enhance command and control functions by integrating advanced AI applications, including large language models, generative AI, and machine learning. These capabilities aim to improve intelligence fusion, battlespace awareness, targeting, and decision-making processes across the Alliance.

“NCIA is pleased to team up with Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE) and Palantir to deliver MSS NATO to the Warfighter, providing customised state-of-the-art AI capabilities to the Alliance,” said Ludwig Decamps, NCIA General Manager. He added that the system will empower NATO forces with critical tools to operate “effectively and decisively” on modern battlefields.

The system is expected to play a central role in accelerating NATO’s technological transformation and readiness in the face of evolving security challenges. “ACO is at the forefront of adopting technologies that make NATO more agile, adaptable, and responsive to emerging threats,” said General Markus Laubenthal, SHAPE Chief of Staff.

According to Palantir, the system reflects the Alliance’s commitment to strategic innovation. “We’re proud to support NATO’s drive to bolster deterrence by deploying an AI-enabled warfighting platform at SHAPE,” said Shon Manasco, Senior Counsellor at Palantir Technologies.

The procurement of MSS NATO was completed in just six months—one of the fastest acquisitions in NATO’s history. Allied Command Operations is expected to begin using the platform within the next 30 days.

SHAPE also plans to use the MSS NATO framework to accelerate the integration of other new technologies, including emerging AI models and simulation tools.
