NATO members prepare plans for new-generation missile to replace RIM-162 ESSM Block 2

By Defence Industry Europe

A group of 12 NATO member states within the NATO SeaSparrow Project Office (NSPO) has prepared a document outlining plans to develop a next-generation surface-to-air missile. The paper, published by the US Office of Naval Research, points to the future replacement of the medium-range RIM-162 ESSM Block 2 currently deployed on naval vessels.

The new missile is intended to deliver enhanced capabilities to counter present and future threats. It will retain the same diameter of 245 mm (10 inches) as the ESSM, allowing compatibility with Mk 41 vertical launch system quadpacks as well as Mk 29 launchers.

The programme will focus on a missile system identified as the Next Significant Variant (NSV). Interested parties will be able to take part in a meeting scheduled for October, when details will be defined on the form the NSV should take.

NSPO aims to review technologies that could be implemented in the new weapon system. The objective is to ensure the missile meets evolving operational requirements while maintaining interoperability within NATO forces.
