Sweden’s four-frigate programme enters production
Construction began one month after Sweden signed the procurement contract for four FDI frigates on 31 August. Rear-Admiral Fredrik Lindén, Head of Naval Systems at the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration, or FMV, led the ceremony.
Sweden’s Ambassador to France, Caroline Vicini, also attended. Naval Group said its sites are supporting the programme in cooperation with FMV in France and Sweden.
“I would like to thank the Swedish authorities for their trust,” said Vincent Martinot-Lagarde, Naval Group’s executive vice-president for Surface Ships. “It is a great honour to put our expertise at the service of Sweden’s sovereignty and naval superiority.”
Production line can deliver two frigates annually
Naval Group said its FDI production line is fully operational and capable of delivering two vessels a year. A total of 13 frigates have been ordered for three NATO navies, with additional delivery slots available in 2030.
The company has invested in its shipyards over several years to support production capacity. It is pursuing options including local construction and partnerships with other European shipyards to accelerate and increase output.
Long-term partnership with Swedish industry
Naval Group intends to strengthen cooperation with Swedish industry through a structured, long-term partnership. The company said this industrial cooperation will accompany its work with FMV on the frigate programme.
Multirole capability for the Swedish Navy
The FDI is a multirole frigate with anti-submarine and anti-air warfare capabilities. Naval Group said the first French vessel demonstrated stability in high sea states during its maiden journey, alongside capabilities for long-endurance and high-intensity operations.
