The companies plan to add an AI software layer to Saab’s existing sensor technology. NestAI said the system would process operational data to refine performance, respond to changing conditions and improve production efficiency.
The project addresses a wider challenge facing European armed forces, which often operate defence systems for decades while threats evolve much faster. Software-based adaptation is intended to reduce the gap between lengthy procurement cycles and changing operational requirements.
Saab’s sensor portfolio will be the first application of what the companies describe as a broader model for introducing adaptive AI into production defence systems. NestOS is designed to allow the technology to learn from operational data and support updates after deployment.
“European defence systems are fielded for decades. The threats they face change in months,” said Peter Sarlin, founder and executive chairman of NestAI.
“Most systems have no way to close that gap after deployment. This partnership is about changing that, building the infrastructure for defence capability that evolves with the threat, not against it,” Sarlin said.
The companies said the work would combine Nordic expertise in defence technology and artificial intelligence. Their stated aim is to introduce adaptive capabilities quickly while retaining the security and reliability required for military applications.
